We’ve been half-heartedly looking for a doormat since we moved in. All the options we found were either too suburban, too Urban Outfitters, or too unremarkable to justify spending any money on. Enter Yellow Brick Home’s tutorial for making a super easy, super cute doormat.
I was at my parents’ for a brief visit over spring break, and since they have a backyard and a printer, I decided that this was the perfect opportunity to work on this stencil and spray paint project.
I printed out “hello” and “goodbye” on cardstock using 300 pt font. I’m not sure what font I ended up using–I was using my dad’s computer, and Word ’97 works well enough for him, thank you very much! Because the words wouldn’t fit on one page, I printed out “hell” and “lo” so I could overlap the second l. I don’t trust my own kerning skills.
Then, I brought my stencils and $5 Home Depot mat outside. I pinned down the stencils.
And then I sprayed away!
I took off the stencils and was pretty pleased with myself:
So, it definitely looks homemade. The “hello” is on a diagonal, and the paint leaked under the stencil. But we are WAY into it! Such an improvement to our lackluster entrance.

awesome!
